Hailed as a musician who “essentially disappears behind the music” (New York Classical Review), twenty-four-year-old William Yang has received international attention upon garnering the Sixth Prize at the 2025 International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition. His playing has impressed audiences in the United States and Europe, and he has debuted at the Warsaw Philharmonic and the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. At the Chopin Competition, his performances gained the admiration of critics around the world: “William Yang once again proved that he is in a class by himself…He approaches every phrase, every dynamic directive, every expressive indication as an art conservator might restore a painting by an old master, removing decades of accumulated dust and grime” (Gramophone). He won first prize at the 2025 National Chopin Piano Competition in Miami, Florida. At the same competition, William also won the Best Mazurka and Best Sonata awards.
As a soloist, Mr. Yang has performed with the Warsaw Philharmonic, Minnesota Orchestra, Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, and the Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra, among others. He studied at the Curtis Institute of Music and was a Kovner Fellow at The Juilliard School, studying at both schools under Robert McDonald. He is currently continuing his studies at the Yale School of Music, studying under Alexander Korsantia. His previous teacher was Paul Wirth. He has also received instruction from notable pianists such as Yoheved Kaplinsky, Antonio Pompa-Baldi, Gary Graffman, Peter Takacs, Boris Berman, Richard Goode and Andre Watts.
William began his piano studies at the age of four and gave his first performances when he was seven. Outside of music, he enjoys working out and playing table tennis.
